In the fast-paced, “fake it till you make it” culture of modern Lagos, Yawaskits delivers a sharp, comedic, and cautionary tale in the 2025 release Ballers and Liars. Starring the irrepressible Kalistus, the film is a masterclass in how pride and the desire to impress can lead to a spectacular downfall.
The Plot: The Battle of the “Big Boys”
The story kicks off with a chance encounter between two former schoolmates: Kalistus and Sylvanus (Vanos) [01:07]. What should have been a nostalgic reunion quickly devolves into a hilarious game of one-upmanship.
Sylvanus brags about his massive real estate empire and luxury cars, claiming he “disguises” as a poor man for security reasons [02:11]. Not to be outdone, Kalistus—who is actually struggling with “sappa” (extreme poverty)—invents a high-end construction company and claims to have a cellular chip from Meta implanted in his hand to summon rides [12:10].

The Climax: When Lies Collide
The tension peaks as the “payday” for the loan shark approaches. Kalistus expects a massive transfer from Sylvanus to settle his debts, but the phone calls go unanswered [30:51]. Fearing for his life, Kalistus decides to “confess” and beg Sylvanus for a real job.
In a brilliant comedic twist, Kalistus tracks down Sylvanus, only to find out that Sylvanus was also living a fake life! Sylvanus reveals he owns nothing; the land, cars, and “empire” belonged to his boss, and he was just “cosplaying” with his boss’s property [37:45]. Both men were lying to impress each other, but only Kalistus is left facing the “Ghosts” he borrowed money from [39:37].
Performance and Themes
Kalistus is, as always, the heart of the film. His facial expressions during the “Meta chip” lie and his sheer terror when the loan sharks arrive are gold. The film explores the theme of “Vanity upon Vanity,” showing how social pressure can force people into dangerous debt just to maintain a certain image.
The chemistry between Kalistus and his “crew” (Solubaba and the designated driver) provides the best laughs, especially their debate over who looks more like a “professional engineer” while wearing borrowed suspenders [24:06].
Final Verdict
Ballers and Liars is a refreshing addition to the Yawaskits library. It manages to be genuinely funny while delivering a sobering message: “If you play with shortcuts, you end up in a dead end.”
